Rural Communities Suffer from Higher Fuel Prices
Recent coverage in USA Today and The Kansas City Star documents how higher fuel prices are hurting small rural communities, where many residents face long commutes to comparatively low-paying jobs. Isolated communities where many residents are off the power grid and use generators in homes and businesses are especially hard hit. Officials in many rural towns fear that higher costs for commuting will cause population losses that will lead to lower tax revenues and further declines in the services available in rural communities.
